Moses Depuy & Maria Wynkoop

Moses was born to Nicholas Depui and Maria Wynkoop in Artois, France in1657; the second of eight children. He came to New Amsterdam with his parents when he was five and was raised in that city. [25]

One source indicates he was born at sea and educated as a navigator before marriage. [17]

As a young man he worked for his father as an exporter. While on a trip to Kingston in preparation for a voyage of which he was to be in command, he met and fell in love at first sight with Maria. He abandoned his voyage to court and marry her. [24]

In 1680 (23) he married Maria Wynkoop (20), who was born about 1660. They were probably married in the Kingston area. She was the daughter of Cornelius Wynkoop and Marie Janse Langendyck, the oldest of seven children.

They had eleven children:

Maritje 1681 m. Alex Rosencrans
Nicholas 1682 m. Wyntje Roosa
Catherine 1684 Probably died young.
Magdalena 1686
Cornelius 1688 m. Catrina Van Aken
Catrina 1690
Moses 1691 m. Margaret Schoonmaker
Benjamin 1695 m. Elizabeth Schoonmaker
Susannah 1698 m. Abraham Van Campen
Catherine 1701 m. Ben Schoonmaker
Jacobus 1703 m. Sara Schoonmaker

They lived for a time in Kingston, probably on land granted to his father, but moved to Marbletown and eventually to Rochester in Ulster County where he was one of the pioneer settlers and one of the original trustees named n the grant of Queen Anne in 1703. [25, 17]

In 1689 (age 32)a major flood made he and his family flee to a barn for three days. As soon as it subsided they moved to a spot of high ground. Two hours later the barn blew down. They were helped by Rosenkrans in an old out-of-use canoe. After suing for blessing Moses walked around praying. [17]

He became on of the most prominent men in Ulster County. He and his sons were substantial farmers and among the foremost in upholding good government. [25]

His sons were the settlers of the Minisink area. Nicholas the oldest son first, later joined by Benjamin. Our Benjamin-2 Depuy is also descended from Susannah, who was his Grandmother Van Campen.

He was common size and broad, strong, straight and broad breast, very healthy. He was prosperous, pious and respectable. [17]

He appears to have had a very close relationship with Jochem Schoonmaker since four of his children married four of Jochem's.

Maria died before 1724 at about age 64. On October 17, 1724 [KM 533] Moses remarried at age 67 Peterneltje De Pre Van Aaken, the widow of Marinus Van Aaken.

Moses lived to a ripe old age and died in 1754 in Rochester at the age of 97.
