Aaron Wade Clark & Esther Layton

Aaron was born June 28, 1811. There are Clark's in the area but not sure of his parentage. He lived in Layton and was a laborer and farmer.

On January 17, 1835 Aaron (23) married Esther Layton (20), born May 12, 1814 in Sandyston Township. She was the daughter of John Layton and Abigail Brink. They are listed in Sussex County Marriages as Aaron W. Clark to Hetta Layton on January 17, 1835; however, the family bible lists the date as January 24. She is listed various places as Esther, Hester and Hetta.

We only know of two children.

It seems likely there would have been more, but the 1870 census lists our Aaron Clark, age 58, laborer with Hester, age 56, and only Maria 13.

A number of Aaron Wade Clark and Aaron Wade Clark, Jr's show up in the records and are difficult to sort out. The 1830 census lists Aaron, Jeptha and Samuel Clark on the same page. The 1840 census lists Aaron and James. The 1850 census lists Aaron and Aaron W.

An Aaron married Ruth Youngs on July 8, 1804 and is listed in a number of land transactions. An Aaron also married Mary Robbins on August 30, 1812.

Esther died January 27, 1877 of asthma at age 62 and is buried in the Layton Cemetery with their son Lorenzo. From the Sussex Independent Obituary: "Esther, wife of Aaron W. Clark, died January 25 1877 at Tuttles's Corner.

Aaron lived another 18 years and died July 2, 1895 at age 84.
