Mathew Edward Depue & Susan Kyte

Mathew was born January 21, 1838 to Elisha (23) and Hannah Everitt Depue (22) in Sandyston Township, NJ. He was the second of eleven children. His father was probably a farmer. He went by Edward, his middle name.

The 1850 census lists him as Matthew Abraham, age 12.

In about 1858 (20) he married Susan Kyte (20), born May 16, 1838. She was the daughter of Peter Kyte and Catherine Carmer. Peter Kyte is the grandson of Thomas Kyte, a school master from Scotland, who taught in the Minisink churches around the time of the Revolution. In the war Thomas served as a Quartermaster in Ulster County, NY. Susan has a brother named Dayton, who would have been the uncle and probable namesake of Dayton Depue. There were a lot of Carmers in the area and a Carmer graveyard near the Dingman Bridge on the Old Mine Road, but I haven't been able to link Catherine to the family.

They had three children:

Dayton A. 1860 m. Mariah Clark
John 1864
Jennie 1868

Matthew was a private in the 27th Infantry, Company A during the Civil War. It was organized for 9 months service and he was mustered in September 19, 1862 at age 24 and left July 2, 1863. They saw relatively little action. In the muster roles he is listed as from Vernon, NJ.

In the 1870 census he is listed as a laborer, age 32. Susan is 31, Dayton 10, John 6 and Jennie 2.

From the death certificates Susan died of pulmonary tuberculosis on June 17, 1881 at age 43 and he died four months later of pulmonary ??? (probably tuberculosis) on October 31, 1881 at age 43. Their youngest daughter would have been 13, Dayton was 21 and married that same year. He too would eventually die of tuberculosis. They were buried in the Abertown (Hainesville) Cemetery.

See A History of Tuberculosis to understand this disease.

An inventory after death in 1881 lists his worth as $200 and he owned 1 cow and 1 bible.

JRR saw the gravestone on December 1979. It had a GAR flag on it. It reads:

"Mathew E. Depue, born Jan. 21, 1838, died Oct. 31, 1881
Susan Kyte, wife of Mathew E. Depue, born May 16, 1838, died June 17, 1881
Dear mother adieu
Thy pains are over
We soon shall meet
To part no more."

The lines perhaps indicate that Mathew knew he was dying too.
