Benjamin-2 Depue & Osee Stivers

Benjamin was born December 14, 1756 to Johannes (29) and Maria Van Campen Depuy (24) in Mount Bethel, PA. He was the first of seven children.

Benjamin served at an early age (20) in the Revolutionary Army. He was at the August 1776 Battle of Long Island and the subsequesnt retreat and some of the subsequent conflicts across N.J. [65, E] Benjamin was a Private in Captain John Hasbrouck's Company of N.Y. Militia, Colonel John Cantine's Regiment, for frontier service. (DAR Lineage) There were several Benjamin Depue's in the war, all related, and which is which is not always clear. There are obvious errors in some of the D.A.R. applications.

In August 1779 (22) he married Osee Stivers (19), born February 8, 1759. She was the daughter of Randall Stivers and Janet Skinner and the second of thirteen children.

As the oldest son (27) he received his father's land of 290 acres in Mt. Bethel, PA in about 1783.

Benjamin was a farmer, although he previously followed the water for a livelihood and owned Lumbar and Durham boats in which he transported grain to the Philadelphia markets. [8]

Benjamin (35) came to Sandyston when it was still primitive. He purchased 115 acres on June 20, 1791 from Thomas and Susanna Romeyn, his aunt and uncle on his mother's Van Campen side. (Deed Book G) The land was in Layton where the Whiting Tavern was located on it. It is now the Pine Hill farm. There is some question about the location. The land was eventually passed on to his son Randall.[34]

In the 1830 census they were living in Sandyston with Randall.

They were members of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Osee died on April 2, 1831 at age 72. Benjamin lived another 9 years and died on June 1, 1840 at age 83. They are buried in the Abertown Cemetery near the road. John Depue had a Revolutionary Veteran Marker installed in December 1979. Stone reads 'Sacred to the memory of Osee, wife of Benjamin Depue, etc.
